Brain teaser: unsolve the grid

Every word game asks you to solve a grid. Backword asks you to unsolve one. You're handed a finished grid: rows of colored tiles, and the answer word sitting at the bottom. What's missing are the letters that got there. Work backwards from the clues to rebuild every guess that led to the solution. It's the same satisfaction as a good logic puzzle. Each tile tells you something. A dark tile means that letter sits in exactly that spot. A warm tile means it belongs in the word, but somewhere else. A pale tile means it isn't in the word at all.
