Grain by Grain: Rice Sorting

Sort rice with a puppy

There is a puppy on the table. At first it is no help at all. It sleeps, it wanders off, it barges through the rows you have just tidied. Pet it enough and it cheers up — and a happy puppy starts carrying grains to where they belong. Slowly. Not always to the right heap. The rest is simple: a plate of mixed grains and two places to put them. No levels, no lives, no timer, nothing to keep up with. Put the phone down in the middle of a plate and every grain is waiting exactly where you left it. Quiet work, warm company.
