• Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs, sometimes denoted LGBTQ+) have disproportionately high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, substance use, and physical health problems. Previous research has posited “minority stress” as the primary cause of SGM health disparities, but exposure to minority stressors (such as discrimination, denigration, and victimization) does not consistently predict physical health issues in SGM populations, thus suggesting that our understanding of the health effects of stigma remains incomplete.
