Crack a new safe every day

Crack the safe one letter at a time. Every day the brass dial is set to a four-letter COMBINATION word, and a four-letter VAULT word waits behind it. To crack it open you build a ladder of real words from the combination up to the vault — turning exactly ONE tumbler (one letter) on each rung, and every rung you submit must itself be a real word. LEAD → HEAD → HELD → HOLD → GOLD, and the safe swings open. The ladder is the whole puzzle. The single letter you turned over glows brass on each rung, so you can read the safe as it falls.
