Find studs before you drill — by spotting the metal already in the wall. Stud Finder uses your iPhone magnetometer to detect iron nearby: screws, nails, and pipes. It cannot see wood. A stud is where fasteners line up. Hold the phone parallel to the wall, a finger’s width away. Walk slowly. The needle shows how likely metal is nearby. Calibrate away from the wall, then mark the peak and take it to the drill. A built-in vertical level helps you hang a shelf or TV straight.
