When your pattern says "increase 8 stitches evenly across the row," Stitches works out where each one goes and writes out the row for you. It does decreases the same way. Tell it how many stitches you have, how many to increase or decrease, and whether you're knitting flat or in the round. You'll get an evenly spaced row to start from, and you can move any of the shaping to suit the knitting in front of you.
