A puzzle of light and shadow

At night, in a fallen ancient city, a nameless figure walks toward the light you hold with your fingertip. Its shadow, cast the other way, is a beast: wherever it passes, cages melt, braziers go out and the seals on the door give way. It is all about distance. Hold the light far away: the shadow grows long and your hero stays in the dark, but moves slowly. Bring it close: the hero hurries, but the watchers can see.
